Heating Problems Guide
This page is a quick reference to common heating problems and is intended only as a guide of things to check before you call for service. It is in no way intended as a substitute for qualified service. Some of the solutions are specific to an installation by Charles M. Watts Air Conditioning, Inc.
Nothing Is Running.
- Potential Cause: Thermostat improperly set.
- First Course of Action: Check thermostat instructions.
- Possible Solution: Set thermostat to heat and desired temperature.
- Potential Cause: Dehumidistat improperly set.
- First Course of Action: Check dehumidistat setting instruction
- Possible Solutions: Set dehumidistat for proper setting, should be set all the way to “ON”.
- Potential Cause: Tripped circuit breaker.
- First Course of Action: Locate A/C circuit breaker in your mainpanel, possibly another at your equipment-find all of them.
- Possible Solution: Reset breaker by turning completely to off position and then on.
- Potential Cause: Tripped firestat.
- First Course of Action: Locate firestat behind air filter.
- Possible Solution: Reset by pressing button on rear of firestat.
- Potential Cause: No fuel supply.
- First Course of Action: Locate fuel valves.
- Possible Solutions: Open fuel valves.
- Potential Cause: System malfunction.
- First Course of Action: Turn system off and see if system resets itself.
- Possible Solutions: Call for service 863-422-2295.
System Is Blowing Air, But Not Heating.
- Potential Cause: Thermostat improperly set.
- First Course of Action: Check thermostat instructions.
- Possible Solutions: Set thermostat to heat and desired temperature.
- Potential Cause: Heat pump outdoor unit circuit breaker is tripped.
- First Course of Action: Locate circuit breaker for outside unit.
- Possible Solutions: Reset breaker by turning completely to offposition and then on.
- Potential Cause: Dirty air filter.
- First Course of Action: Locate and inspect filter.
- Potential Solution: Change filter.
- Potential Cause: Outdoor coil iced up.
- First Course of Action: Inspect outdoor coil for ice.
- Potential Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295
- Potential Cause: Tripped circuit breaker.
- First Course of Action: Locate heat circuit breaker.
- Potential Solution: Reset breaker by turning completely to off position and then on
- Potential Cause: System malfunction.
- First Course of Action: Turn system off and see if system resets itself.

System Is Running, But There Is No Air Flow.
- Potential Cause: Dirty air filter.
- First Course of Action: Locate and inspect filter.
- Potential Solution: Change Filter.
- Potential Cause: Airflow obstruction.
- First Course of Action: Investigate for blocked return, collapsed ductsor any air blockage.
- Potential Solution: Remove blockage or call for service 863-422-2295
- Potential Cause: System malfunction.
- First Course of Action: Turn system off and see if system resets itself.
- Potential Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295.
System Will Not Turn Off.
- Potential Cause: System malfunction.
- First Course of Action: Check if air at vents is hot or slightly warm.
- Potential Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295.
My Utility Bills Are Higher Than Normal.
- Potential Cause: Dirty air filter.
- First Course of Action: Locate and inspect filter.
- Possible Solution: Change filter.
- Potential Cause: Outdoor coil is dirty or iced over.
- First Course of Action: Inspect outdoor unit.
- Possible Solution: Clean coil or defrost if possible or call for service 863-422-2295.
- Potential Cause: Cool running with heat.
- First Course of Action: Check air temperature at air vents-check for damaged thermostat wire.
- Possible Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295
- Potential Cause: Duct or air handler has air leakage.
- First Course of Action: Investigate for damaged or leaking air handler or duct (Check filter access).
- Possible Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295.
- Potential Cause: Outdoor unit is not running/Heating with electric heat only.
- First Course of Action: Check thermostat is set properly, reset circuit breakers.
- Possible Solutions: Call for service 863-422-2295.
- Potential Cause: Damaged thermostat wiring.
- First Course of Action: Check around outdoor equipment for damage.
- Possible Solutions: Call for service 863-422-2295.
