Cooling Problems Guide

This page is a quick reference to common cooling problems and is intended only as a guide of things to check before you call for service. It is in no way intended as a substitute for qualified service. Some of the solutions are specific to an installation by Charles M. Watts Air Conditioning, Inc.

 

Nothing Is Running.

  1. Potential Cause: Thermostat improperly set.
  2. First Course of Action: Check thermostat instructions.
  3. Possible Solution: Set thermostat to cool and desired temperature.
  1. Potential Cause: Tripped circuit breaker.
  2. First Course of Action: Locate A/C circuit breaker in your main panel, possibly another at your equipment-find all of them.
  3. Possible Solution: Reset breaker by turning completely to off position and then on.
  1. Potential Cause: Tripped firestat.
  2. First Course of Action: Locate firestat behind air filter.
  3. Possible Solution: Reset by pressing button onrear of firestat.

 

Inside Fan Is Running, But Not the Outside.

  1. Potential Cause: Thermostat improperly set.
  2. First Course of Action: Check thermostat instructions.
  3. Possible Solution: Set thermostat to cool and desired temperature.
  1. Potential Cause: Tripped circuit breaker
  2. First Course of Action: Locate A/C circuit breaker in your main panel, possibly another at your equipment- find all of them.
  3. Possible Solution: Reset breaker by turning completely to off position and then on.
  1. Potential Cause: Damaged thermostat wiring.
  2. First Course of Action: Check around outdoor equipment for damage.
  3. Possible Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295.
  1. Potential Cause: System malfunction.
  2. First Course of Action: Turn off and see if system resets itself.
  3. Possible Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295.

 

System Is Running, But No Air Flow.

  1. Potential Cause: Dirty air filter.
  2. First Course of Action: Locate and inspect filter.
  3. Possible Solution: Change filter.
  1. Potential Cause: Airflow Obstruction.
  2. First Course of Action: Investigate for blocked return, collapsed ducts or any air blockage.
  3. Possible Solution: Remove blockage or call for service 863-422-2295
  1. Potential Cause: System malfunction.
  2. First Course of Action: Turn off and see if system resets itself.
  3. Possible Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295

 

My Utility Bills Are Higher Than Normal.

  1. Potential Cause: Dirty air filter.
  2. First Course of Action: Locate and inspect filter.
  3. Possible Solution: Change filter.
  1. Potential Cause: Outdoor coil is dirty.
  2. First Course of Action: Inspect outdoor coil.
  3. Possible Solution: Clean if possible or call for service 863-422-2295.
  1. Potential Cause: Heat running with cool.
  2. First Course of Action: Check air temperature at air vents-check for damaged thermostat wire.
  3. Possible Solution: Call for service 863-422-2295.
  1. Potential Cause: Duct or air handler has air leakage.
  2. First Course of Action: Investigate for damaged or leaking air handler or duct (check filter access).
  3. Possible Solution:  Call for service 863-422-2295.
  1. Potential Cause: Low refrigerant/system malfunction.
  2. First Course of Action: Check discharge air at outdoor air-unit, should be warm to hot.
  3. Possible Solution:Call for service 863-422-2295.
